Our Story
North Highland Memorial Community Center Story
The idea for the building was initially proposed by Henry Robinson at the 1997 North Highland High School reunion. In the following months, alumni discussed and planned the concept, aiming to establish a center for activities and educational programs. John Dozier, an alumnus with Air Force logistical experience, contributed to the planning process. Strategic sessions focused on logistics, budgeting, and design, with resources and tasks delegated among alumni and local stakeholders.
Donors such as Van Miller, Windel Mitchell, Ron McCartan, Nelda Cain, and other former students provided funds to initiate the community center project. Meetings were held at the Bank of Prattville and Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, coordinated by committee leaders including Lee L Smith and Benny Hadnot. Fundraising methods included a pocket change drive organized by John Dozier, which involved collecting donations throughout the College Heights community. Support also came from local figures like Sheriff Herbert Johnson.
As plans developed, fundraising efforts expanded to include bake sales, charity events, and benefit concerts. The evolving design incorporated facilities like a library, gymnasium, and meeting rooms to serve various community needs. The land for the center was donated by John Dozier, located in College Heights.
A groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of construction, supported by donations, expertise from individuals such as contractor Willie Frank Bates, and physical assistance from contributors like Silvia Brantley. As completion neared, volunteers helped finalize the facility, and the center began hosting programs ranging from workshops to cultural events.
Upon opening, the center offered resources including a computer lab, mentorship initiatives, and senior support services. Volunteer and donor involvement continued during its operation. The North Highland Memorial Community Center acknowledges its presidents: 1st Richard Roberts, 2nd Mary Adair, 3rd Richard Roberts, 4th James Washington, 5th Henry Robinson, and 6th Derrick Moncrief.

Greetings Community Leaders, Pastors, and Business Partners,
On behalf of the North Highland Memorial Community Center (NHMCC), we are honored to invite you to participate in the upcoming 40th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade, a cherished community tradition that celebrates the life, legacy, and continued impact of Dr. King.
This annual event is more than a parade – it is a movement that brings our entire community together in unity, reflection, and hope as we honor Dr. King’s vision of equality, justice, and service. Your presence and participation help strengthen that vision and ensure that it continues to inspire future generations. This will be a great way to showcase and recognize the City of Prattville as being the first municipality in the State of Alabama to observe the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Prattville has been celebrating this great holiday since January 1986.
We invite your church, business, or organization to join us in one or more of the following ways:
- Enter a float, vehicle, or walking group
- Showcase your youth, dance, or ministry teams
- Provide volunteers to support parade operations.
- Offer sponsorship or make a donation to help make the event successful.
The parade will take place on Monday, January 19, 2026, beginning at 0900 am.
